The Swim Segment is a 1.2-mile open ocean swim clockwise around the Santa Cruz Wharf. The start line is on the beach on the east side of the Santa Cruz Wharf. Competitors must pass to the left of the swim buoys. Lifeguards and race officials will be present on the course at all times. Upon exiting the water, it’s a short run across the beach and continued run down Pacific Ave into the transition zone at Depot Park.

Start Time
There will be a MANDATORY MEETING at 6:45am at the start line for last minute race instructions along with current reports of course conditions. Competitors will lineup at 6:55am and no warm-up in the water will be allowed after this time. The first wave of swimmers goes off promptly at 7:00am. It is mandatory that you start only at your designated time. All swimmers must wear the official race cap provided.

Rules & Instructions
No swim or flotation devices may be used. Do not dive into shallow water. Adhere to the rules of USA Triathlon. Pass to the right of all swim buoys. Follow any and all instructions of the lifeguards and race officials.

Water Temperature
Wetsuits are highly recommended but not required. The average water temperature for Cowell’s Beach, Santa Cruz the first week in September is typically 60 degrees Fahrenheit. For the current water temperature in Santa Cruz, check out http://www.surfingsantacruz.com/watertemp.html.

Surf Conditions
The section of coast used for the Swim Segment is one of the most swim-friendly areas in Santa Cruz. For up to date surf conditions, tide charts and surf cams around the Cowell’s Beach area.
